Routine monitoring of diabetes mellitus in adults at primary health care level, and self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG)

Tanja Kemp

Abstract

Different guidelines exist for the routine monitoring of diabetes mellitus. Recommendations are discussed that are based on the Society for Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes of South Africa (SEMDSA) guidelines for type 2 diabetes, and on those of the International Federation (IDF) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Guidelines for diabetes management are not rigid, and should be modified according to individual patient factors.

Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is an important component of intensive glycaemic control. SMBG is only effective if both the patient and the medical practitioner are able and motivated to use the information to adjust therapy or diet. Different approaches how to utilize it are discussed.
